 Wayne Rooney's first half goal was enough to see off Birmingham in the first game of the season. Rooney met Nani's cross with a glancing header that came off the post but reacted quicker than the Brum defenders to get the winner.

Antonio Valencia marked his home debut in style, creating the opening goal and playing a key role in the second goal. Both goals came from surging runs down the right hand side, the first was a deep cross met by a fantastic Rooney header. The second was another cross pulled back to inside the box where a combination of Macheda and defenders resulted in Tom Cleverley recieving it with enough composure to take a touch and score infront of the Stretford End.
