 Dimitar Berbatov's two second half goals sent United back to the top as Bolton were comfortably beaten 4-0. An 11th own goal in Man Utd's favour this campaign broke the deadlock in the first half, before Berbatov added two more and Gibson scored 90 seconds after coming on a a sub.

As the half time whistle went fans could be forgiven for feeling slightly anxious about the number of missed chances. However they need not have worried as just 5 minutes into the second half Wayne Rooney opened the scoring, heading in Valencia's cross. Berbatov soon added an un-orthodox second, a deflected second goal for Rooney made it three before Owen and Nani added one each.

After 33 years outside the top flight Burnley marked their first home game of the season in style with a 1-0 win over United. The red devils looked out of ideas for large parts of the match and although they created a few chances they failed to take any with even Carrick's penalty being saved.

Wayne Rooney's first half goal was enough to see off Birmingham in the first game of the season. Rooney met Nani's cross with a glancing header that came off the post but reacted quicker than the Brum defenders to get the winner.
