Wayne Rooney secured Manchester United’s 19th domestic championship with a controversial penalty against Blackburn that leaves the Ewood Park club facing a final-day battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League. The point that United required to confirm the title came courtesy of Rooney’s 70th minute spot-kick, which was only awarded following a lengthy discussion between referee Phil Dowd and his assistant, Andy Halliday, following a foul by goalkeeper Paul Robinson and Javier Hernandez.

Manchester United stroll into the Champions League final

Manchester United 4 – 1 Schalke 04

Manchester United will play their third Champions League final in four years at Wembley on Saturday 28 May 2011. The red devils sealed their place in the final with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Schalke at Old Trafford, winning the tie 6-1 on aggregate. Their opponents at Wembley will be Barcelona, who reached the final by defeating their arch-rivals Real Madrid 3-1 overall in the other semi final.

Manchester United defeat Chelsea to close in on record 19th title

For a season that has been so unpredictable, and so full of ups and downs for all of the teams involved in the title race, the “finale”(as it had been branded), was settled astonishingly fast. The English Premier League season extends over 38 match days, but at Old Trafford it took Manchester United less than 38 seconds to deal a massive blow to Chelsea’s title hopes. The visitors never completely recovered from United’s impressive start, and could not do enough to deny the hosts the three points.

Arsenal halt Man United's progress

Arsenal 1 - 0 Manchester United

Arsenal won with a goal from Aaron Ramsey, whose career has been disrupted by injury, but may have quaked near the end when Gaël Clichy's studs made contact with the calf of the substitute Michael Owen. The referee Chris Foy took no action and was at least consistent here in his scepticism towards such appeals.
