Trbiute to Edwin

articleOur new columnist Joe has written a tribute piece on Edwin Van Der Sar. Click read more below to see his thoughts on that Manchester United goalkeepers. With the Premiership slowly drawing to what will most certainly be a climactic ending to another season, the days are also drawing to a close on the final season of the Red's #1. One of the very few names that can be mentioned in the same breath as the "Great Dane" Peter Schmeichel, the Dutchman Edwin van der Sar.

As Manchester United's shot stopper since 2005, van der Sar has minded the posts and made some of the most incredible saves to seal the win, as well as to keep the Devils in it. Edwin's resume for MU includes minutes ranging in the thousands without conceding a goal and numerous cup wins on the domestic and European level. Needless to say, Edwin will most certainly be missed, as well as his presence and ability to read and break down an attack.

But with stats as great as Edwin's rivaled only by Schmeichel's, how do you fill a gap left by a goalkeeper as well-known and as skilled as Edwin? The same question was asked at the departure of Schmeichel in 1999. Will United run a dry spell of temporary keepers? Will Tomas Kuszczak or even newbie Anders Lindegaard fill the gloves in the same way Edwin has? Its foolish to think that a keeper position can be taken lightly. So for such a high profile club with high profile players managed by a high profile manager, whats the next move? Sir Alex surely has the influence to attract a high profile name, many of which have been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

So for now we wait. We wait and see what move Sir Alex in store for the team, and ultimately for all of us. Whether it be a young gun between the sticks, or a more experienced veteran, it will take some high class and definitely some skill to fill the void left by Van der Sar
