We don’t need money

Richard's second article looks at why United don't need millions to be successful as he compares the signings Chelsa and Manchester United have made.

When I say to people we are three points clear of a team who spends, spends, spends, my friends say well you spend as well. I say yes we do but look at what Chelsea spent this year. They only seem to remember Shevchenko who is a 30m flop. Then I point out they spent 1m on Hilario. Khalid Bouhlarouz came for 6m and has been a flop. Ashley Cole came for 5m plus William Gallas which has turned out to be a terrible deal. Salomon Kalou has joined for just over 7m aswel which isn’t worth the money. And Michael Ballack also joined. It was a free but his wages take up a lot. None of those have been world successes and when you also look at 24m for Essien, Carvalho, Drogba and Wright-Phillips you see that only Drogba has been really worth it. Paulo Ferreira for 18m is something I don’t understand and 6m for Wayne Bridge also. Geremi was a total waste of money and they even decided to buy a United flop in Seba Veron. Joe Cole is worth the money and Robben for 8m was a snip as too was 14m for Cech. We buy one mega buy a season. Van Nistelrooy 2001, 2002 Forlan, 2003 Ronaldo but 12m was a bargain, 2004 Rooney, 2005 no-one, 2006 Carrick and 2007 will probably be Hargreaves. But Chelsea have only produced one youth ranker in John Terry and he has ended up Chelsea’s best player. Mourinho doesn’t believe in youth and goes for world stars who are past it. He will probably bid 40m for AC Milan’s Ronaldo this season just because he is well-known.

Then you look at our team and see the youth products and the bargains Fergie has pulled off looking for youth. With the exception of Ferdinand, Ronaldo, Carrick and Rooney United haven’t spent ‘Chelsea style’.

Our goakeeping total reaches 3m. Edwin Van Der Sar on a free is magic, Tomasz Kuszczak for 2m is decent and just 1m for Ben Foster is fantastic. Gary Neville, John O’Shea and Wes Brown are all products of the academy. Even the total for Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, Gabriel Heinze and Mikael Silvestre come to less than Chelsea spent for Shaun Wright-Phillips. In the midfield two our best ever players Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs came through the youth. Darren Fletcher also came through the ranks and Kieran Richardson came on a free and Park Ji-Sung also arrived for a bargain 3m. Promising stikers Dong Fangzhuo and Giuseppe Rossi have also arrived on frees and Louis Saha and Alan Smith both arrived for under 10m whilst Solskjaer arrived for under 1m, not bad eh? Other promising stars such as Gerard Pique, Chris Eagles and Jonathan Evans also came through the academy so in ten years time when the average age of Chelsea’s squad is 60 and the youth of Manchester United and Arsenal is ruling the world I think Roman Abramovich and Jose Mourinho may take their business elsewhere.
