The name on every Manchester United fans lips right now is Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara. As soon as this rumour started gaining pace, comparisons started being drawn to the sagas of Moura, Sneijder et. al. However United fans seem to have more reason for hope with every update that comes as days pass.
David Moyes still technically has not taken over as Manchester United manager, however his impact is already being felt.
Mike Phelan and Eric Steele have been moved on at the request of the new manager while there are strong suggestions the highly respected Rene Meulensteen will leave too.
Many people, staff included, are seen to have expected minimal change to a system which clearly isn’t broken. Moyes though, although acknowledging the success, is clearly mindful of the problems the club faced when Sir Matt Busby couldn’t make a complete cut from management when he first retired in 1969.
With the season over, it’s now time for the start of the new season, the season of transfer rumours, million pound splashing and cheque waving. Yes, it’s the start of a new transfer window and with it brings tonnes of new names heading in to Old Trafford and the odd name or two leaving.
It was a weekend for reflection, where football around the country joined to pay their respects to the men and women to have died in duty. With United playing their 11th league game of the season there appeared several other numerical parallel's to provoke reflection on where United are going.Prior to Man Utd’s 3-2 victory against Aston Villa Sir Alex Ferguson had set United a target of 100 goals in the Premier League. Chicarito’s double (or hat-trick if you’re feeling generous) on Saturday brought the tally to 29 goals in 11 matches.
There has been a lot of speculation in recent weeks around various targets for the club in the summer. From Charlie Adam to Van Der Vaart One thing is clear from our away performances this season we need a creative force in midfield. With Van Der Sar’s impending retirement a top goalkeeper has to be of equal necessity.
These two positions can be identified without requiring a degree, it is of no surprise therefore that Manchester United are being linked with every potentially available player in that position. United fans will be used to this, although it makes a change in being linked with players rather than players at the club being linked with others. To this degree, we know to take every “exclusive” and “close sources” with more than your recommended daily intake of salt.
