Goals from Wes Brown and Wayne Rooney earned Manchester United an impressive victory against Blackburn at Ewood Park. Ewood Park has not been a happy hunting ground for United in recent times, with only one win in the previous 10 encounters, but that didn稚 deter United at all, as they dominated the encounter from start to finish coming away with all three points.
The game, after getting off to a relatively slow start,
picked up the tempo quickly, with Nemanja Vidic going close early on. Rooney’s
deflected corner went past everyone to find its way to the Serb stationed at
the far post, but he couldn’t quite a decisive touch. A few minutes later, it
was Blackburn who created a good chance with Matt
Derbyshire troubling Van der Sar with a good low shot. But they were
immediately forced on the back foot just minutes later, with Fletcher firing
wide of the far post after Berbatov’s clever through ball had found him
unmarked in a good position, and Giggs forcing a fine save from Brown. United’s
domination finally paid off when Jason Brown couldn’t get to Rooney’s cross
after coming off his line for it, with Wes Brown taking advantage of the error
by heading it into the net. Some of the Rovers players complained that Vidic
blocked off Jason Brown but the ref was having none of it. United could have
had a second late in the first half but Rooney couldn’t quite loft his ball
over Brown who saved well. United’s dominance of possession continued into the
second half with Blackburn not threatening United’s goal
much apart from a Santa Cruz shot
which was comfortably saved by Brown. On the hour mark, the second game
clinching goal which United had been pushing for did finally come, from the
boot of Wayne Rooney. Brown passed to Ronaldo on the right wing who cut inside
Martin Olsen, and pulled back for Rooney who hammered it into the top corner.
United continued to create chances, with Rooney almost adding another goal
minutes a later with a neat lob and Tevez striking the post from 20 yards, but
United couldn’t find a way past Brown again. But it hardly mattered in the end,
as United ran out comfortable winners and came closer to their top form which
won them the double last season.
