Manchester United's Gary Neville has failed in his appeal against his £5,000 fine by the Football Association. The defender was found guilty of improper conduct after taunting Liverpool fans following United's late winner at Old Trafford on 22 January.

The 31-year-old, who is a representative for the Professional Footballers' Association, gave evidence via video-link at his hearing.

After the verdict he insisted that he would appeal the decision on principle.

Neville was scathing of the FA's charge on him and said that he was being unfairly punished.

He said after the verdict: "I do not think it constituted improper conduct or bringing the game into disrepute, which is why I am appealing the FA decision.

"I know people say £5,000 is nothing to a Premiership footballer, but I'd have contested the fine if it was 50p."

Neville was handed the fine in February.

"I still believe that my goal celebration against Liverpool at Old Trafford has been blown out of all proportion," he added in his column for The Times newspaper.

"To accept it would be to admit guilt and my punishment sets a bad precedent at a time when people say that there should be more interaction between players and the fans."
