“Ferguson is desperate to sign a long-term replacement for Roy Keane when the transfer window opens in July and has secured funds to spend on the midfielder.
“Ferguson watched Makoun in action against Paris St Germain on Tuesday and has also been linked with a move for his
Lille team-mate Mathieu Bodmer after both players impressed against United in this season's Champions League.
Makoun has revealed he is keen on a move away from France and would be interested in a switch to the Premiership.
He told The Sun newspaper: "If a good offer comes in, myself, the manager and the board will study it.
"There comes a time when you have to look elsewhere."
The Old Trafford boss is also planning a multi-million pound raid for Lyon playmaker Mahamadou Diarra and hopes to have both deals in place before United's pre-season tour of South Africa.
Red Devils chief executive David Gill said: "The sooner we can get the players in, the quicker they can integrate."
