While we all know how Manchester United's game at the Madjeski Stadium, played out...you may not know how hard of a game it truly was the for the visitors.Manchester United 3 Reading 2United were typically brilliant coming out of the gates, with three goals in the oppening six minutes. John O'Shea cut back the ball, which was intended for Kieran Richardson, but the defense cleared, but only for it to fall to the Argentian defender. With his first of the season, Gabriel Heinze curled in a shot that eventually went under Federici's body. Less than two minutes later, Louis Saha took a long punted ball from Rio Ferdinand...and didn't disapoint. After gaining control nicely on his chest, he brought it down, and smashed it across the Reading No. 2. In the opening six minutes at the Madjeski, United were on the verge of embarrassing 6th place Reading. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hit what proved to be the winning goal. Kieran Richardson, carved open the defense, all though there was suspicion of off-side. The United legend wasn't to know that. He curled it home, in typical Ole style. 3-0 to United after 6 minutes. Reading wouldn't go down with out a fight. On 21 minutes, Dave Kitson, pulled one back for the Royals. This would prove to be the pivotal moment in a highly entertaining cup tie. Ferdinand let Kitson go, and it proved costly. Near post header...3-1. Into the second half we went. Still in front by two goals. As at Old Trafford, it would be a very nervy last few minutes. Lightning struck United twice. Leroy Lita had made it 3-2 at Old Trafford, in the league, and did the same here. Good header. 3-2. United were only saved from extra time, after Gunnarsson hit the cross-bar in stoppage time. Onto the winner of the Middlesbrough, WBA game. West Bromwich Albion 1 Boro 1 (a.e.t) 4-5 on PK'sThe hosts started much better than the premiership visitors. Darren Carter made sure of that on 26 minutes. When he budged the 'Boro net, Brad Jones made no effort to stop the curling shot. Into the second half, and many believed an upset was on the cards. Not if the "Wizard of 'Aus'" could help it. After a series of good passes back and forth between Stuart Downing, and Yakubu, the ball came to Mark Viduka. From a Parnaby cross, Viduka shot, and it went into Dean Kiely's net, via a deflection off of defender Curtis Davies. The rest of the game came, and went and so did extra time. But not with-out things boiling over. Albion player Nathan Ellington was given a red for a over the top tackle on Stuart Parnaby. Into Penalties. For 'Boro, George Boateng, Yakubu, Julio Arca, James Morrison. While their new January signing, Dong Gook Lee drove his shot from 12 yds. wide. For WBA: Neil Clement missed. When it went into sudden death, Sherjill MacDonald blew the decisive shot over the bar. 'Boro are at home to UTD on March 10th. Blackburn Rovers 1 Arsenal 0Most would call this an upset, but with Arsenal still recovering from their Carling Cup Final defeat, Blackburn took their oppurtunity to knock them out. After tying 0-0 at the Emirates, Arsenal should have known they were in for a hard night. The first half at Ewood Park was event-less. The only thing's that really took a spot on the high-light video was Julio Baptista, firing over the bar with a header from about 5 yards out, and a penalty appeal from Freddie Ljungberg. Aliadiere, and Ljungberg had both previously been played in and messed up huge chances. That proved costly on 87 minutes. With everyone in the ground convinced it was going into extra time, substitue, Benni McCarthy had other ideas. After a perfectly timed run, and a great ball from the defense, the South-African striker turned the Arsenal defense in-side out, and fired into the roof of the net. Ewood Park simply errupted. Blackburn was bombarded in the final minutes, including 3 minutes of stoppage time, but no significant chances were made. Blackburn held on to play at home to Manchester City.
